Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş

Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş completed his undergraduate studies in Geological Engineering at Ankara University in 1982. He started in the same year a Master's degree at Ankara University and after finishing his courses, he completed his thesis under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Vedat Doyuran from Middle East Technical University (METU) in hydrogeology (1984). While working as a research assistant in the Geological Engineering Department, METU – Ankara between 1983 to 1990. In 1990, he completed his thesis titled “Hydrogeological and Hydrogeochemical Evaluation of the Güzelyurt Grandwater Basin (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus)” and obtained his Ph.D. degree in in hydrogeology in METU. Throughout his career, he achieved various academic achievements at Near East University (NEU). He was promoted to Assistant Professorship in 1992, Associate Professor in 1994, and Full Professor in 2001. He held leadership positions at NEU, including Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Head of the Department of Student Affairs, Head of the Disciplinary Board, a Member of the University Senate, and a Member of Managing Board, General Secretary, Vice Rector and Acting Rector. He has twice obtained Cyprus-American Scholarship Program Short Term Training Grants given by the USA – Cyprus Fulbright Commission. He has conducted research activities at the United States Geological Survey Institution (USGS) in collaboration with prestigious universities including Yale University, Brukling College and Vermont Medicine Center. In 2010, he was elected as a member of the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Board (YÖDAK) by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliament. He was appointed as the “General Coordinator” of Water in the TRNC Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources Project (“Water transfer form Türkiye to the TRNC” project). He became the first term President of the International Universities Search and Rescue Council (UÜAKK) in 2012 and YÖDAK presıdent by the presıdent of the TRNC in 2013 (for 4 years). In 2014, he was elected as a Member of the Managing Board of the Association of Quality Assurance Agencies of the Islamic World in Bahrain. Currently, he is the Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as the board chairman of the Energy, Environment, and Water Research Center (ENÇESU). He has supervised more than fifteen Ph.D. and fifty M.Sc. students and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, and other internationally indexed, conference proceedings, book chapters and books (about 300 manuscripts). He organized many national and international symposiums and conferences. He is also an editor and member of editorial boards for several international journals. Among his accomplishments he has received numerous awards including “NEU Scientific Research Awards 2009, 2010, 2018, 2020 and 2021”, “NEU Scientific Research Honour Award 2019”, “TÜRKSAV 19. UluslararasıTürk Dünyasına Hizmet Ödülü (2014), Ankara, Turkey” , “International Council for Scientific Development and International Academy of Science (Health and Ecology), Pavlov Honour Pin in Gold, Medal and Certificate, February (2007), Innsbruck, Austria”.

His research areas are related to water resources, climate change, sustainability, smart cities, and clean energy. He is a lecturer for various engineering subjects at BSc. and MSc./Ph.D. level, related to natural resources, particularly water and renewable energy, climate change, the environment, and sustainability.
